History of the Maple Grove Preservation Society

  MAPLE GROVE EVENTS CALENDAR FOR 2009

Maple Grove will be holding a walk during "Creek Week" in Poughkeepsie, on Friday, July 10 at 5:30 p.m. We will be walking from the house down to the wetland area and stream coming from the Poughkeepsie Spring, with talks by John Mylod and Roy Budnik about "The Poughkeepsie Spring: natural and social history." All are welcome.

House Open for Visitors

Maple Grove will be open for visitors from 10 a.m. until noon on the first Wednesday of the month from April to November. The following are the open-house dates for 2009:

Words, Words, Words

Writers reading at Maple Grove

During the summer or 2008, a series of authors who live in the Hudson Valley read from their published and works in progress, in one of the first-floor rooms at Maple Grove. We are currently planning another exciting series for summer 2009. Words Words Words - Summer 2009 reading will take place in the Billiard Room from 3 to 5pm in the afternoon.

Da Chen is the New York Times bestselling author of Colors of the Mountain. In addition to his memoirs he is a novelist, children's author and mesmerizing speaker.
Walter Keady was born and educated in Ireland. He was ordained and served as a Catholic missionary priest in Brazil for several years. After leaving the priesthood he moved to the United States where he has lived ever since. His novels include Celibates and Other Lovers, Mary McGreevy, and The Altruist.
Susan Orlean is an American journalist whose feature writing drolly but affectionately considers "softer" subjects than some of those covered by her colleagues. She has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992, and has contributed articles to Vogue, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Outside. Her best known book, The Orchid Thief was made into a film starring Meryl Streep.

Lemonade will be served on the porch after the readings. These events are open to the public. The Three Arts, an independent bookseller, will have books by the writers (and other titles of interest) available for sale. These events are free, and a voluntary contribution toward the Maple Grove Restoration fund will be welcome.

Dramatic Readings

During the spring and summer of 2009, The Over the Pond to Poughkeepsie Ensemble will proudly present several staged readings. No tickets required. Donations will go entirely toward the Maple Grove Restoration Fund.

The Over The Pond to Poughkeepsie Ensemble will present KINGS AND QUEENS on Sunday, July 12, at 4 p.m.The event marks the third in a series of performances by the newly formed Hudson Valley-based professional theatrical company, all of which benefit the restoration of Maple Grove. Admission is free; at each performance, donations to help restore the site are encouraged.

KINGS AND QUEENS will include scenes from plays and films about royalty past and present. The Over The Pond to Poughkeepsie cast for this presentation will be Linda Roper and Chuck Muckle.
